Charlie Day, an actor, writer, producer, and musician, used his natural skills when he went from being unknown to becoming a star overnight as the star of one of cable TV’s most surprising hits. Day first became known for his roles as a guest star on popular TV shows like “Law & Order” (NBC, 1990–2010) and “Third Watch” (NBC, 1999–2005). He finally became a star when he joined the ensemble cast of the experimental comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.

Charlie Day Movie

Day portrayed one of the four egotistical, morally flawed friends in Charlie Day’s new movie, a project set in an Irish pub in downtown Philadelphia. He and his equally funny co-stars, including TV veteran Danny DeVito, slowly gained a devoted fan base with their politically mistaken antics, turning the show into a true surprise hit. Day’s career in films took off when he landed a supporting part in “Going the Distance” (2010) and then played a major role in “Horrible Bosses” (2011).

Since then, there have been numerous Charlie Day movies, showcasing his versatile acting skills. Just five years ago, Charlie Day Young was relatively unknown, but now he’s a celebrated host of “Saturday Night Live” (NBC, 1975–) and collaborates with renowned directors like Guillermo del Toro. The multitalented Day made a name for himself in the entertainment world with his boyish charisma and charm for working-class people.

In the early stages of his career, Day often spent his free time making funny sketches and silly short films with Jimmi Simpson, whom he was living in New York City, and other actors they had met at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, such as Nate Mooney,  Simpson, David Hornsby, and Logan Marshall-Green. These home videos gave him ideas for a few scripted short films that he made with Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney in 2003 after he moved to Los Angeles. Three struggling, self-centered actors in Los Angeles got into some awkward and darkly funny circumstances between auditions and jobs in these home movies. These scenes became the basis for the pilot episode of the comedy show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

On FX TV in 2005, season one of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia came out. Day co-created the show, is an executive producer, and writes a lot for it. He also plays one of the main characters, Charlie Kelly. His performance garnered widespread attention and has been the foundation for many Charlie Day memes, including the famous Pepe Silvia plot meme. When its fifteenth season came out in 2021, Sunny became the longest-running live-action comedy on American TV. The show is still going strong, and its sixteenth season will come out in 2023.

Day, McElhenney, and Howerton have been putting out The Always Sunny Podcast since November 2021. They planned to rewatch the whole series and talk about what happened behind the scenes, but the podcast became more about the banter and relationships among the three creators.

Besides co-creating and producing It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Day has also worked on several other TV shows. Unsupervised (2012), and How to Be a Gentleman (2011–2012) comedies made by Sunny writers David Hornsby, Scott Marder, and Rob Rosell, ran for a short time in 2011 and 2012. As of 2018, he is co-creator of the Fox sitcom The Cool Kids, which stars Martin Mull, Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier, and Leslie Jordan and takes place in a retirement community. When the show’s first season was over, he was one of the executive producers.

A new half-hour comedy called Mythic Quest (2020–present) was announced on August 9, 2019, as one of the original shows for Apple TV+, the streaming service that was just starting. The show was co-created by Day, McElhenney, and Megan Ganz, who served as an executive producer on Sunny. There will be a fourth season of Mythic Quest, and Day is both a co-creator and an executive producer on the show.
