What is TOEFL?

TOEFL Exam Pattern | Everything You Need to Know: TOEFL stands for Test of English as Foreign Language. Along with its rival IELTS, it is one of the most taken tests in the world to prove English language proficiency.

For academic purposes, it is used for admission process in English speaking countries to assess the English language abilities of the student.

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2018 – 2019

TOEFL test pattern is of two types: IBT exam and PBT Exam. IBT stands for internet-based exam and PBT stands for paper-based exam.

IBT is taken by most of the candidates as the PBT is taken only where internet and computer systems are not available.

India has the format of the IBT test, and there are 30 test centers for TOEFL in India. The test duration varies from 3 hours 10 minutes to 4 hours 20 minutes maximum for IBT test.

Modules in TOEFL Exam Pattern

There are four Modules in TOEFL Exam Pattern

  • TOEFL Reading
  • TOEFL Listening
  • TOEFL Speaking
  • TOEFL Writing

TOEFL Test Pattern

Here is TOEFL test Pattern for each module:

1. TOEFL Reading

The reading section contains 3 to 4 passages, called tasks. There are academic texts and the questions are asked from them.

The total time duration of 60 to 80 minutes maximum. The number of questions ranges from 36 to 56 question for all the passages.

2. TOEFL Listening

The Listening Section contains audio samples of classroom discussions, lectures and conversations to be heard, and there will be questions after that.

The time duration of the listening section is of 60 to 90 minutes, and the question ranges from a total of 34 to 51 for all the audio pieces combined.

There is 10 minutes of break given at the end of the listening section as per the TOEFL test pattern.

3. TOEFL Speaking

TOEFL Speaking is the candidate’s speaking ability assessment. The candidate is given 6 speaking tasks, which he or she has to perform on a microphone, and is to be assessed later.

The time duration of TOEFL speaking module is 20 minutes. The main task to do for the speaking module is to express and give an opinion on familiar topics of yours.

4. TOEFL Writing

TOEFL writing module contains two tasks. It is an assessment of the candidate’s ability to express his or her opinion in writing.

There are opinions and argument essays written by the candidates and they are scored on the vocabulary, grammar, flow of the essay and the ability to make a point with the help of evidence and examples.

TOEFL Scores

The final score of TOEFL exam will be the total of the scores in each module. It is between 0 and 120, 120 being the highest score one can get.

The scores are declared after 10 days of the exam, it can be viewed online on the ETS website.

There is an option at the time of TOEFL registration where you can choose the institutes to send your scores to.

If you want the printed TOEFL scores, they will be delivered to your address in 13 days from the date of your test.
