The Speedwick Chronicles A mainstay of young adult entertainment ever since the popularity of the bestselling book series, the series finds charm and excitement by combining a modern tale with the timeless flavor of mythological creatures and the magic of old wives’ tales.
That key element of the book is sadly underused in The Roku Channel’s TV series adaptation of Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi’s The Spiderwick Chronicles novels.
Constant interruptions from throwaway lines referencing Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, Pumpkin Spice Latte, and people saying “slay” immediately stamp an expiration date on it, while appearances in the menagerie of books are few and far between. Does not show any imaginative nature.
However, this leaves little room for the actual fantasy parts of this fantasy series, meaning that The Spiderwick Chronicles employs its group of magical creatures in much the same way as the Harry Potter spinoff series Fantastic Beasts does – meaning, With difficulty. “The Spiderwick Chronicles” will premiere on April 19 on the Roku Channel.
