We’re into the thick of things in the IPL and there have been some fascinating matches. Stadiums have been packed out and the crowd has been treated to some superb T20 action.

The batsmen will usually steal the headlines and there have been some superlative performances to date. Even in previous editions of the IPL, there have been some stellar batting displays that will live long in the memory.

It’s time to reminisce on five of the most prolific run scorers in the history of the competition. Please note before that this list is in no particular order, and those with an asterisk attached to their names are still active IPL players.

MS Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings

MS Dhoni may be in the autumn of his career as he is 40 years old. He is still churning out the runs and he is currently ninth on the list of all-time leading IPL run scorers, with 4,866 runs and counting to his name.

There seems to be a calmness about the Chennai Super Kings star at the crease and you could hardly call him a flashy batsman, although he does have an array of shots up his sleeve.

Whether it is a cover drive or a hook, Dhoni can light up an IPL game. Although he stood down as Super Kings captain before the start of the tournament, his side hasn’t received as much backing from bookmakers in the outright market to win the tournament. Some of the best betting sites in India, including Betway, have made them outsiders, but it would be amazing for a celebrated batsman such as Dhoni to pick up a fifth IPL title.

Chris Gayle (2009-2021)

One of the most swashbuckling batsmen of his generation, Chris Gayle is known for being an explosive batters who can move through the gears and dish out punishment to bowlers who are slightly off line.

In 141 innings, Gayle amassed 4965 runs and he averaged just shy of 40. Gayle was one of those players who was known for his brute strength and when in full flow, he was a joy to watch in the IPL.

AB de Villiers (2008-2021)

AB de Villiers was one of those enterprising batsman that boasted plenty of flair during an IPL career that spanned spells with three different teams – Delhi Daredevils, Delhi Capitals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Anyway, De Villiers knew how to clock up runs – 5,162 to be exact – and he also boasted an extraordinary strike rate of over 151.

David Warner (2009-2022)

While we think more about David Warner’s exploits at international level with Australia, he thrived playing in the IPL as it suited his strengths as an aggressive batsman.

Runs came to him easily, as he amassed 5,640 runs at an average of 42.08 and he was never afraid to take on the bowler regardless of the situation. Currently, he’s the fourth-time highest IPL run scorer of all time.

Virat Kohli (2008-2022)

Virat Kohli has spent 14 years in the IPL with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and he is one of those iconic players that has had an indelible impact on the IPL.

With over 6,400 runs to his name, Kohli knows how to mix it up and he is still inspiring the younger generation of players. Although his average of just shy of 37 is smaller in comparison to some of the other most prolific batsmen in the IPL’s history, his stats speak for themselves.

  1. Virat is a great batsman and he breaks a lot of records in his career as his name is the top run score in IPL history but this season he’s having a bad patch he played almost 10 games and just scored 1 fifty. There was a time when Virat hit fifty in every match but now he is struggling hope he will pick his form back.

  2. Yeah I agree with you these all superstars are the best batter of IPL and they are still playing and achieving more. It’s almost time that they will leave IPL and retire from cricket. IPL will not be IPL without these players.
