If you are here, chances are you’re confused about building your skincare routine. You don’t know the necessary steps or how to layer a plethora of different products. Worry not, as Dr. Chaudhry will give you insider tips on how to build a skincare routine according to a dermatologist.

Most skin issues arise when we take our skin for granted and have a poor skincare routine.  It then caused us confidence problems. Let’s discuss how to have a skincare routine. Our skin demands different care day and night. It is essential to discuss the routine separately. Every skin has separate needs and a good dermatologist at cliniccleo.com will guide you about the right routine you should follow as per your skin type.

Morning SkinCare Routine

Water

The first and foremost approach after waking up is to wash out the face with lukewarm water. Many people have different concerns over the temperature of the water.

I usually recommend that my patients apply lukewarm water over their face. It will remove the previous day’s excess and open up the pores. It is also the research-proven fact that people who wash their face with lukewarm water tend to act healthily and remain energetic the whole day.

Cleanser

After washing the face with lukewarm water, now is the time to cleanse it with a cleanser. Cleansers usually come in different forms, and many people don’t even know how to use them. Many people go harsh over them and damage their skin. I recommend my patient Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.

It is readily available, cheap, and a dermatologist’s choice. It is also possible to apply it on every skin type. It should be applied gently over the skin with fingers, and then after fifteen seconds of application, wash again with normal water.

You can use other face cleansers if you want but make sure that it does not contain any harmful ingredients for your skin. A bonus if it’s natural or dermatologically tested.

Toner

After washing the skin and applying cleanser, it is now time to apply toner to the skin. Many people underestimate toner’s importance, but it is essential to make the skin acne-free, moist, and free from dryness. The toner clogs the pores of the skin, hydrates it, and makes it balanced.

Toner should be selected with great care after looking at the ingredients. I recommend Thayer’s Witch Hazel By Lavender.

It is easy to use and is available throughout the world. It can be applied to every skin.

Please note that if you have acne, choose the toner with benzoyl peroxide in it. Apply the toner with the tip of your finger, and don’t rub it hard over the face.

Face serum

Face serum comes next in the daily skincare routine. Like other skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, RD Medical hydrogel and glycolic acid are essential and should be applied to the face regularly. They prevent the skin from dangerous sun rays.

Apply the serum gently over the face with the help of fingertips. The ingredient choice is significant, and I usually recommend Vitamin C serum to my clients as it has antioxidant properties and prevents oxidative stress and skin malignancies. If you ask me about my choice, then Authentic Skin Naturals Vitamin Serum is my choice.

Moisturizer

The moisturizer comes next in the queue. It helps in the hydration of the skin and prevents it from the hazardous effects of makeup.

Always apply a dermatologist-approved moisturizer over the skin, and please note that it should be applied BELOW the makeup.

I recommend Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer to my patients. It is safe, skin-friendly, and readily available.

Again, the application of moisturizer counts a lot. Apply it over the face using your fingertips, and don’t rub hard. Choose your moisturizer accordion to your skin type. It prevents the skin from extreme dryness and extreme oiliness.

Sunscreen

The last important thing is sunscreen which plays a vital role in preventing skin from hazardous sun rays.(James Q. Del Rosso et al., 2015; Pullar et al., 2017).

Yes, always apply sunscreen before going out in the summer. Many dermatologists ask their clients to use sunscreen indoors, too, but I’m afraid I have to disagree with them.

Choose your sunscreen wisely by checking the SPF factor mentioned on its label. Apply it with the tips of your fingers, and don’t massage it hard.

I recommend La Roche Posay to my clients. It is a safe, readily available, and skin-friendly choice. If your sunscreen is not compatible with your skin, immediately consult your healthcare practitioner.

Plus, if you’re going to the beach (as many are), you might want to opt for waterproof sunscreen. While you’re at it, also check out how you can protect your hair against sea water.

Night Time Skin Routine

Similar to the daytime, it’s very much essential to build a nighttime skin routine. We struggle with choosing the best of the products to apply at night time. Here we can discuss the best products and how to apply them so that we have a good skincare routine

Make sure that you are paying attention to the compositions and ingredients of the products. Do not opt for products simply because they are being promoted by artists and celebrities on social media and tv screens. The need of the hour is to be an informed customer and choose products that can help you get the desired results. If you want to be completely safe and find an effective solution, please go for dermatologic skin care products at all times. Make them a part of your day and night skin care routine.

Cleanser

Our first and foremost approach at night should be to remove all the dirt and makeup from the skin. It can be done by cleansing the skin. Never think of sleeping makeup on because it can be hazardous for the skin. Always sleep with a makeup-less face. It helps to open up the pores, and you feel light.

I recommend to my clients the Neutrogena products to remove all the dirt from the face. Gently apply over the face by the tip of fingers and then rinse it off.

Toner

After cleansing it, it is essential to use the toner over the skin, which balances the skin and prevents it from environmental toxins by stabilizing the skin’s pH. You can use the same toner day and night because its mechanism of action is the same.

Medical or topical treatments

Now is the time to apply the medicines or ointments over the skin. Many dermatologists prescribe medicines that should be applied at night only, and it is better to apply them over the toner. If you have acne, we usually prescribe you adapalene gel to apply.

Furthermore, if, for instance, your skin is free from any skin ailment, it’s better to apply vitamin C or hyaluronic acid over it. (Messaraa et al., 2020; Suleyman Piskin, 2007)

Moisturizer

If we have dry skin, it is essential to moisturize it with many of the moisturizers available. Make sure you don’t pour moisturizer into the eyes as it can be hazardous for the eyes. Gently apply it over the face by using the tips of the fingers and wash it the following day.

The usefulness of moisturizers is research-proven, and that’s why people who use moisturizers regularly have clean, moist, and glowing skin. I recommend EPara moisturizers to my clients.

Conclusion

Skin is a vital organ of the body that needs proper care. It demands nutrients, care, time, and proper follow-up. Having glowing, smooth, blemish-free skin made possible by having a good skincare routine.

Starting from using proper skin-friendly products to eating healthy food is much essential to have perfect skin. As a fellow dermatologist, I recommend my patients consult your dermatologist for a perfect skincare routine. Their visual and medical check-up of your skin can reveal what is necessary for your skin condition.

Please note that for different conditions, you might want to stay away from some ingredients. For example, pregnant women shouldn’t use retinoids.
