In many homes, the majority of the plumbing is out of sight and, therefore, out of mind. For the most part, this approach doesn’t matter. But, when your plumbing system is old and develops a leak, it is much better to know about it early on.

If a leak is left undetected it can cost you a significant amount extra on your water bill. It can also damage your property, creating thousands of dollars worth of repairs. In short, you will wish you had identified the plumbing issue earlier.

Let’s take a look at the most common issues and how to troubleshoot them. But, you should also remember that while it is useful to be able to identify an issue yourself, it is still better to get a qualified Sydney plumber to rectify the issue for you;

In fact, in many cases, you need to call a plumber simply to stay on the right side of the law.

Leaks

By far the biggest plumbing problem is leaks. All leaks use additional water and will increase the cost of your water bill. However, a small leak may not be noticed on the water bill. That is why you should check your water meter regularly.

The simplest way to do this is to take a meter reading and make sure that you d not use any water in your house for the next couple of hours. You can then take another water meter reading and, if the meter had moved, you have a leak.

Tracing it doesn’t need to be complicated. Turn off any valves you have inside your property to restrict the flow of water and then redo the water meter test.

You can turn individual valves on and keep redoing the test, this will help you to locate the section of plumbing that is leaking.

Of course, there are often other signs, such as a damp patch on the wall, floor, or ceiling. If you see these you need to investigate where the pipes are and whether they are leaking.

Noises

The next most common plumbing problem is strange noises in your pipes or from your appliances. This can simply be air in your system; however, it can also be a problem with the appliance and it needs to be looked at by a professional. The sooner the problem is located the more likely it is that it can be repaired and not simply replaced.

Slow drains

If left untreated a slow drain can allow the wastewater to back up and enter your home, that is not a pleasant thought. Fortunately, slow drains are a warning sign that a clog is building; taking prompt action will eliminate the issue.

You can use a drain unblocker, an auger, drain rods, or even a plunger; but, you should back it up with a drain camera to inspect the pipes and ensure they are clear.

It is worth noting that a single slow drain suggests an issue with the pipework from that appliance. But, more than one slow drain tells you there is an issue with the main sewer line. You will want to deal with that promptly.
