World Book Day 2024

World Book Day 2024: World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated every year on 23 April. This day is dedicated to literature and writers around the world. World Book Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world. This special day is marked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in an effort to promote the love of reading, writing books, translation, publishing and copyright.

History

World Book Day is celebrated on 23rd April for many reasons. World Book Day was first created by Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a means to honor the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes (most famous for Don Quixote). One reason for this is that many prominent writers like William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died on the same date and World Book Day is celebrated to honor them. Furthermore, this date was a natural choice for the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris in 1995 to pay worldwide tribute to books and writers on this date, encouraging everyone to have access to books, unesco .org says.

Theme

This year the theme of World Book and Copyright Day has been “Read Your Way”. Its purpose is to show how important it is to develop a love of reading and learning among people around the world. “Read Your Way” theme inspires people of all ages to learn how to interact with literature that speaks to them

World Book and Copyright Day main goal is to help people, especially youth and children, discover the magic of reading. By celebrating books and writers, UNESCO highlights the powers of writing to promote cultural diversity, multilingualism and the exchange of ideas.
