Over the last six months, I ran detailed audits on 200 SaaS homepages across stages ranging from pre-seed startups to public companies. The goal was simple. Find the patterns. Figure out why so many beautifully designed websites still fail to convert.
What I found surprised me. The failures weren’t random. The same 12 issues showed up again and again, across industries, across stages, across budgets. A bootstrapped founder in Bengaluru and a $50M Series B company in San Francisco were making the exact same mistakes.
Here’s the full list, ranked by how often each issue appeared.
1. The hero says nothing in 3 seconds
Roughly 87 percent of homepages failed the three-second test. A visitor should know what the product is, who it’s for, and what to do next within three seconds of landing. Most heroes had vague slogans like “modern workflows for modern teams” that pass no test. Specificity wins.
2. The CTA is buried below the fold
On 71 percent of sites, the primary call to action was either invisible above the fold on mobile or competing with three other buttons of equal weight. Every homepage should have one obvious next step. Most have five.
3. Trust signals are missing or generic
Logos, testimonials, and usage numbers belong near the hero, not buried in the footer. About 64 percent of the homepages I audited had trust signals only after the fold. A surprising number had none at all, or worse, used stock photos and made-up testimonials that visitors instantly distrust.
4. The site doesn’t explain who it’s for
Trying to appeal to everyone signals you serve no one. 58 percent of homepages failed to name a specific audience. The best converting sites name their user inside the first three lines. “For Series A SaaS founders” beats “for growing businesses” every time.
5. Mobile experience is an afterthought
Even when 70 to 90 percent of traffic came from mobile, most homepages were clearly designed for desktop. Tap targets too small. CTAs disappearing below the fold. Forms painful to complete. Page speed crawling. Trust signals shrinking until they disappear.
6. Page speed is a silent killer
Around half of all sites took more than four seconds to load on a 4G connection. Each additional second of load time correlates with a 7 percent drop in conversion. Your hero image is probably costing you customers before it even renders.
7. Schema markup is broken or absent
This one is invisible to the eye but devastating to discoverability. 68 percent of homepages had missing or incorrect schema markup. Without it, Google and AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini struggle to figure out what your business actually does. AI search is becoming the new front door, and most SaaS sites are unreadable to it.
8. The pricing page asks too much, too soon
Most pricing pages demanded credit card details before showing real product value. Pricing should answer questions, not create new ones. A clear comparison, a starting price, and an obvious upgrade path beat clever feature matrices every time.
9. Internal linking is chaotic
A well-structured site teaches Google and AI exactly which pages matter. 73 percent of sites had no clear internal linking strategy. Cornerstone content was orphaned. Important pages buried four clicks deep.
10. The blog and product feel like two different companies
When the homepage promises premium and the blog reads like SEO spam from 2018, visitors notice. 41 percent of audits showed this disconnect. Tone, design, and quality should match across every page.
11. Conversion tracking is missing or broken
This shocked me. 38 percent of SaaS homepages had no working conversion tracking. Founders were spending money on ads without knowing what worked. You can’t improve what you can’t measure.
12. The site doesn’t say what happens after signup
Most homepages stop selling at the signup button. The best ones preview the first session. What happens after I click? What will I see? How long until I get value? Removing that uncertainty is one of the easiest conversion lifts available.
What this means for your homepage
If you’re nodding along to even three of these, your homepage is likely costing you customers right now. The good news is that most of these are not hard fixes. They are invisible until someone runs a proper diagnostic, and then they become obvious in an hour.
