A diamond seed sits inside a sealed chamber. The air is removed and replaced with a carbon rich gas, typically methane and hydrogen. The temperature rises to around 800 degrees Celsius. The gas breaks apart and carbon atoms begin settling onto the seed one layer at a time, building the diamond slowly upward like slow rain on a still surface.
