Airtel International Roaming Explained: Plans, Packs, and Tips for 2026

Travelling abroad with your Indian SIM used to mean one of two things — either paying steep roaming charges or hunting for a local SIM card the moment you landed. That has changed significantly. Airtel now offers international roaming plans across 189 countries under a single recharge — no SIM swap, no new number, no separate activation at the airport.

Before you travel, activating the right pack takes minutes. Through Bajaj Pay, you can recharge your Airtel international roaming pack from the same platform you use for electricity bills, FASTag, and mobile recharges — one place, instant confirmation, no last-minute scramble at the departure gate.

How international roaming works

When you travel abroad, your Airtel SIM connects to a local partner network in that country. Airtel has roaming agreements with operators across 189 countries. Your Indian number stays active. Calls, data, and SMS work as they would in India — subject to the limits of your chosen pack.

A few things to know before you travel:

  • IR service is disabled by default on all Airtel connections. You must activate a pack or enable IR service before departure
  • Postpaid users can enable IR service without buying a pack — but usage is charged at standard rates, which are significantly higher. Always buy a pack before you travel
  • Prepaid users must purchase a pack in advance. Standard roaming rates without a pack are not capped
  • No SIM change needed — your existing Airtel SIM works abroad once IR is activated
  • Incoming calls from India are charged to the caller at standard international rates — your pack covers your outgoing usage

Choosing the right pack — what to check

Not all packs work the same way. Before buying, verify the following:

  1. Country coverage All current Airtel IR packs cover 189 countries under a single recharge. Confirm your destination is on the covered countries list at airtel.in/cmsircountries before activating.
  2. Data speed Packs specify high-speed data limits. Once the high-speed allowance is exhausted, data continues at a reduced speed — not cut off entirely. Check whether the pack offers a top-up option for additional high-speed data if needed.
  3. Incoming calls Incoming calls from India are free on most Airtel IR packs. Incoming calls from local numbers abroad may or may not be included — check the pack details for your specific destination.
  4. Activate before departure Do not wait until you land. Activating a pack abroad can be unreliable if your device has already connected to a foreign network. Activate at least 24 hours before your flight.
