Dubai, UAE // When an air conditioner stops blowing cold air in a Dubai summer, the typical homeowner asks for a gas refill and expects the job done in 30 minutes. HVAC engineers say that reflex is costing residents money they do not need to spend.
Refrigerant operates in a sealed loop. Under normal conditions, it never requires topping up. A low level means the system is leaking. An ac gas refill without a prior leak test adds refrigerant to a system that will lose it again, often within weeks. Routine maintenance and proper coil cleaning keep system pressure within spec, reducing the frequency of refrigerant loss in the first place.
“We get this call ten times a day during summer,” said Khalid Nasser, Senior HVAC Engineer at European Technical. “The homeowner says the AC isn’t cold, asks for a gas refill, and expects us to be done in 30 minutes. When we explain that the unit needs a leak test first, some just want to skip to the refill because it’s cheaper. Six weeks later, the gas has leaked out again and we’re back for the same job.”
Proper repair identifies the leak source, fixes it, and recharges the system once. The alternative is a repeating cycle that shortens compressor life and accumulates cost across a single season.
What the Service Numbers Show
European Technical’s 2025 service data found that 72 per cent of AC units presented for a gas refill had identifiable refrigerant leaks. Of those, 41 per cent were in the evaporator coil, 28 per cent at brazed joints on the outdoor condenser, and 19 per cent along the copper line set.
The pattern of repeat calls follows directly from those figures. Households that chose the refill-only option often returned two or three times in the same summer. “We’ve seen households spend on three refills in a single summer when one repair would have fixed it permanently,” Nasser said. “It’s false economy, and it degrades the compressor every time the system runs low.”
Aging Line Sets in Older Communities
Demand for air conditioner gas refill in The Lakes tracks closely with building age. The Emaar community dates to the mid-2000s, and original copper line sets are approaching 20 years of service. Daily thermal cycling, from 25 degrees Celsius overnight to 48 degrees at peak summer, weakens joints until micro-leaks develop.
The Springs shares the same vintage and the same failure modes. For residents requesting a refill in either community, European Technical recommends nitrogen pressure testing before any recharge. “The Lakes and The Springs share the same vintage and same issues,” Nasser noted. “We recommend nitrogen pressure testing for any unit in these communities needing a refill. If pressure holds 24 hours, recharge. If it drops, there’s a leak worth finding.”
DAMAC Hills presents a different profile. Newer construction and higher specifications reduce leak incidence across the community. Most requests for air conditioner gas refill there involve older units in early-phase villas that need a one-time repair and recharge rather than recurring service visits.
Studio City, also newer, sees construction-era defects as the primary leak source. A single repair typically resolves the problem for good.
The R-22 Phase-Out
Older AC systems in Dubai commonly use R-22 refrigerant, now being phased out globally under the Montreal Protocol due to its ozone-depleting properties. The UAE has restricted imports, and the cost per kilogram has tripled since 2020. That shift is changing the repair-versus-replace calculation for older units.
“R-22 pricing is doing what regulation alone couldn’t,” Nasser said. “Homeowners are finally retiring 15 and 20-year-old units because the gas alone costs more than the monthly payment on a new inverter system.”
One Test Before Any Refill
“If a technician wants to refill without testing for leaks first, find a different technician,” Nasser said.
A proper service call includes a pressure test, leak detection, and coil inspection before any refrigerant is added. That process takes longer up front. Over a full summer, it saves both money and equipment.
