Car insurance add-ons that a first-time driver should purchase.

Topic starter

Being a first-time driver is exciting and nerve-racking too! There are so many moments you will cherish such as taking your parents on a drive for the first time or going on your first road trip with your friends. However, there are also scary and extremely pressuring moments too, like parallel parking for the first time or having the car stall on you in the middle of the road. Not to mention, there is also the constant fear of damaging your new car due to the lack of judgment or due to someone else’s negligence.

Luckily, unfortunate events such as accidents, theft, natural & man-made calamities are covered under your car insurance policy. This ensures that you will be compensated for the repairs of any scratches, dents, etc. that occur to your new vehicle. Along with this, car insurance also allows provides extra elements of cover (known as add-ons) that can be especially helpful for first-time drivers. Here is a list of these add-ons that those new to driving should consider purchasing.

  1. Roadside assistance.

Some first time drivers panic the first time their car breakdown. They do not know what to do or how to get themselves out of the situation. However, with the roadside assistance add-on, first-time drivers can avail expert mechanical care at the site of a breakdown in no time. Just get in touch with the insurance provider, make them aware of your situation and your whereabouts and they will send a breakdown vehicle to you. They will have the vehicle repaired on the spot or tow it to the nearest network garage in case it is not.

  1. NCB protector.

NCB is short for No Claim Bonus. It is a reward provided to you by the insurance company for not making a claim against your policy. This reward is usually a discount on the premium amount you have to pay to renew your motor insurance policy. The best part of an NCB is that it keeps increasing with every claim-free year. For example, during the first year, if you do not make a claim, the insurance company will offer you a 10% discount when you renew your plan. Similarly, you will get a 20% discount for the second claim-free year. The NCB keeps increasing until it reaches its maximum of 50%. However, the moment you make a claim, the NCB will be eliminated and you will have to pay full premiums once again.

This can be an issue for first-time drivers as the chances of making a claim are high and reaping the benefits of an NCB can seem difficult. However, such drivers can opt for an NCB protector – it will keep their NCB valid even after making a claim!

  1. Return to invoice.

In case of an accident wherein the car is totally written off, the general insurance company is liable to pay only the IDV of the vehicle. This is the current market value of the vehicle after factoring in things like depreciation. However, if the insured opts for the return to invoice add-on, they will get the current on-road cost of their vehicle. For first time drivers whose vehicles are severely damaged, this add-on can be extremely helpful.

First-time drivers need more protection than those who have previous experience driving on Indian roads. You can get this added protection through the many add-ons on offer. We hope this has been helpful, good luck and all the best!
